Melia refused to actually shop herself. Felt it was beneath her dignity to go to such crass places as modern supermarkets.
"Lirian! Soren!" an old, cracked voice rang out. "How are you?"
The two parents winced, turned around, to face the menace associated with local grocery shopping--Old Miz Garner. As far as anyone could tell, she lived on the bench in back of the Sainesbury, and insisted on engaging everyone who passed by her--probably how she managed to know every bit of gossip.
"We're fine," Lirith managed.
"Good, good. How's that little boy Tanner of yours? You know, I'll never understand how you possibly raise a child in that madhouse, dearie."
Lirith lifted a single shoulder in an unconcerned shrug. "Taneth's fine. We've a room to ourselves, and we keep him away from the others."
The old woman didn't look convinced. "Well, I still don't know how you do it."
"We manage," Sareth replied shortly. "In fact, we intend to homeschool Taneth--the starter will be an excellent tutor."
They received a long, rheumy look that clearly indicated disbelief. "You've a teacher among among those madmen, then, have you?"
"You might say that," Lirith prevaricated, elbowing Sareth. "I'm afraid we need to get back to the house with these groceries, so Melia can make dinner." They hurried past her, to the produce section.
"Huh," Miz Garner said, puzzled. "It's only half past four."
